Heâs not totally wrong.
âWhere is she?â
âYou canât talk to her.â
âIs she under arrest?â
âNot yet.â
âLiam, give me five minutes with her. I can clear this all up for you.â
He stands back and cocks his head. âSomething I need to know?â
âLet me talk to her first.â
He looks away, out the front door. âGo ahead.â
I rush past him into the apartment, barely noticing all the people crowded in the kitchen. My gaze narrows on Charlotte sitting on the couch.
âMarcel!â
I wrap her up in my arms. âAre you okay?â
She sits back and rage wells up inside when I see her split lip and reddened cheek.
âWhat happened?â
âChuck. I thought it was you. He came in. We argued.â She shakes her head. âIt got out of control so fast.â
I take several deep breaths, beating back the fury threatening to consume me.
Later. Iâll kill him later.
âMarcel, I think theyâre going to arrest me.â
Cupping her chin, I lean down, my lips close to her ear. âI need to tell you something. Please hear me out.â
She turns, frantic eyes searching mine. âWhat?â
Keeping my voice low, I hold her wrists in my hand, careful not to disturb her bandaged fingers. âIâm gonna get you out of this. But youâre going to be pissed when I tell you how.â
She swallows and in an extremely patient way says, âMarcel. I love you. But Iâm about to be arrested for attempted murder.â She leans in lowering her voice to an urgent, but exasperated tone. âSo, if you can get me out of that, I donât really fucking care how you do it!â
âShh. Play along and pretend you knew about this the whole time.â
She grits her teeth. âKnew about what?â
âAfter your uncle bugged your phone, Z and I placed some cameras in your apartment. He wanted to be sure we could trust you. And I knew it would help me prove to the club you can be trusted.â
She laughs.
And laughs.
Nutty, breath-stealing laughter.
Christ, maybe her mind finally broke under the stress of all this crazy shit.
Breathing hard, she shakes her head and gives me a crooked not-quite-all-there smile. âWhere?â she finally asks.
I point to the hallway. âOne out there.â I point out the other two in the living room.
âThe bedroom?â
âNo.â
âBathroom?â
âFuck, no.â
She tilts her head. The shock seems to have worn off. âYou did it to make sure you could trust me?â
I cup her face in my hands. âNo. I already trust you, Sunshine.â
She exhales a heavy sigh and shakes her head. âShit. I canât even be pissed, you sneaky bastard.â
âIâm sorry. I hated doing it.â
âWell, it looks like itâs going to be the thing that saves my bacon.â She nods at the door. âCall your buddy in.â
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
âExplain to me again why you set up hidden cameras in your apartment, Miss Clark?â Officer Hollister asks in a bored, disbelieving tone.
âChuckâs been erratic since my mother died. I didnât trust him. In the past, heâs had people spy on me. I was afraid he or someone working for him might try to break into my apartment.â I point to the front windows of my apartment that extend from ceiling to floor and shrug. âIt was a precautionary measure.â
âA proper deadbolt or locks on the window might have been a cheaper choice,â he says dryly. âBut continue.â
He slides his patient, professional cop stare from me to Marcel, where it turns into more of an I-know-youâre-both-full-of-shit glare. âI suppose you installed the cameras with your girlfriendâs permission?â
âA buddy of mine did. But I helped him.â Marcel rubs his hand over my back. âChuck hasnât been thrilled about us dating. Wanted to make sure she was safe.â
âUh-huh.â Liam grunts. âRight.â He jots down a few notes and glances up again at Marcel. âThis buddy have a name? One of your brothers, Iâm guessing?â
âAngus Frazier,â Marcel supplies and I realize I had no idea what Zâs real name was.
Liam ducks his head, speaking into the radio at his shoulder. âWhoâs the guy out front?â
He listens to the low static that I canât make out at all.
âSend him in.â
Zâs filling up my doorway a few seconds later.
âHave a seat, Mr. Frazier,â Officer Hollister says, nodding to one of my kitchen chairs that had been dragged into the living room earlier.
Before sitting, Z observes the scene around him. How close Teller and I are sitting. The injuries on my face and hands. I narrow my eyes and glare at him a little. In response, his mouth gives the barest hint of a twist.
âWhat can I help you with, officer?â Z asks in a disinterested tone.
âYou place some equipment in Miss Clarkâs apartment recently?â
Z doesnât skip a beat. âYup.â
âAt her request?â
âYup.â
âThe purpose?â
âA safety precaution.â
He asks Z more technical details. While Officer Hollister was able to view the video of my uncle bursting into my apartment and our argument leading up to the stabbing on Marcelâs phone, the police want to have their own copy to examine. Z makes arrangements to provide it to them.
Officer Hollister stands. âMiss Clark, youâre not under arrest, but Iâm going to caution you not to leave the area. Officially this is still under investigation.â
Marcelâs arm tightens around me. âIâm bringing her to my place, but itâs still in Empire County.â
âThatâs fine.â
Marcel stands and shakes the officerâs hand. âThank you.â
Officer Hollister jerks his head toward the door. âLetâs talk.â
Marcel leans down and kisses my cheek. âIâll be right back.â He and Z share a look and a nod before Marcel follows his friend out the door.
Z sits up. âYou okay, Charlotte?â The concern in his voice seems genuine. I donât detect a hint of remorse for spying on me though.
âAs good as one can be after getting attacked and finding out my boyfriend and his buddy invaded my privacy.â
Thereâs that twist to his mouth again, like either he canât believe a female has the nerve to speak to him that way or he finds me entertaining.
âAnd if you say you did it for my own good, Iâm going to kick you out of my apartment.â
His mouth stretches into a wide grin. âNot for your good.â He jerks his chin toward the door. âFor his.â
I cross my arms over my chest and wince at the pain in my hand. âWhat else do you want me to do to prove myself?â
Z seems to understand that by you, I mean the club. He leans forward, elbows on his knees. âJust keep doing what youâre doing.â
âWere you this suspicious of Hope and Trinity?â
He takes the nosy question in stride. âTrinity? No. Sheâd been with the club a long time. Girlâs loyal to her core. Hope wasnât as much of an issue of loyalty as it was understanding.â
âYou didnât want her to inadvertently bring unwanted attention to the club,â I say.
âRight.â He touches his chest. âPersonally, I like you. I think if you were a rat, you wouldâve sold out your uncleâs club a long time ago.â
âNever occurred to me, honestly. I donât know what theyâre into. Never wanted to know.â
âThatâs good. A good olâ lady doesnât ask questions.â
I roll my eyes, and he laughs. âHopeâs a lawyer. She never asks questions?â
âDonât know what she and Rock talk about in private. But in front of us? No.â
âWhat are they talking about?â I gesture toward the door.
/>
Without looking away, he answers, âProbably warning Teller not to retaliate against Merlin and let the police handle it.â
My hand flies to my mouth. âOh, shit. I hadnât thought of that.â
His lips quirk. âA little naive for a lawyer who grew up around bikers, no?â
âForgive me, I did take a few knocks to the head.â
He doesnât laugh at my sarcastic tone. In fact, the humor drains from his expression, leaving one pissed off biker across from me. âDonât worry. Heâs definitely going to pay for that.â
âWell, I did jam a knife into him.â
Our conversation ends when Teller steps back into the apartment, closing the door behind him with a quiet click. Z raises his eyebrows and Teller subtly inclines his head. I watch the unspoken exchange, trying to determine what theyâre planning.
âWhat did he say?â I blurt out.
âMerlinâs in surgery. Once heâs stable, heâll be discharged from the hospital straight to Empire County Jail.â Tellerâs gaze falls on me. âLiamâs leaning toward self-defense. But itâs not totally up to him. You might have to give another statement.â
âI should probably have an attorneyâ¦â Mentally, I run over the criminal attorneys I know. Good God, I donât want to have to call David and ask him to help me.
âHope can do it,â Z suggests.
âOr I know someone if she canât, or you donât want to involve one of your friends,â Teller adds.
âThanks.â
Teller sits next to me, taking my uninjured hand in his. âTell me what happened now.â
âWhat?â I gasp in fake shock. âYour video didnât have sound?â
Z chuckles. âNo.â
A key scrapes in the door and Z reacts as if weâre under attack. âRelax. Itâs probably my brother.â
âHey, Charlotteââ Carter stops dead in his tracks. âWhat the hell?â
In all the craziness, I never called Carter to tell him what happened.
Carter eyes Z warily then Teller. âHey, Teller. Whatâs going on?â
âRelax, kid,â Tellers says, introducing him to Z.
Z sits up and shakes Carterâs hand.
âJesus, Char. What happened?â
I glance at Teller and I think he understands I only want to tell Carter a portion of what happened.
I recite a carefully edited version of events, leaving out my rape seven years ago and the cameras.
âWhat the fuck? He must be taking Momâs death harder than we thought,â Carter says when I finish.
Is that what brought on his sudden bout of craziness? Or something else?
Clearly uncomfortable around Z and Teller, my brother stands and paces. âSo this was all about you and Teller dating?â He stops and glares at Teller. âI warned you something like this would happen. You swore youâd protect her!â he shouts.
Shocked at my brotherâs outburst, I open my mouth to defend Teller but he squeezes my hand and answers the accusation.
âI know, Carter. I shouldâve seen this coming after the other day. Iâm sorry,â Teller says.
âCarter, Iâm fine.â
âThereâs more to this youâre not telling me, isnât there?â
I duck my head. âNo.â
âCharlotte.â The anguish in his voice makes me lift my head and meet his eyes. âWhat if someone else in the club comes after you?â
âIâm going to stay at Tellerâs place tonight.â
His wary gaze shifts to Z and back to my face. âAre you sure thatâs a good idea?â
Teller seems to understand what my brotherâs afraid of better than I do. âZâs here to protect her, not hurt her, Carter.â
Z flashes an impishly innocent smile. âTruth.â
âThe cops have his name,â I add. âIf I go missing, theyâll know where to look,â I assure my brother.
Teller and Z both choke on their laughter.
My brother isnât amused. His brows draw down in a scowl. âThatâs not funny.â
âSheâll be safe at our clubhouse,â Teller says. âChuckâs supposed to be transferred to Empire County Jail, but you can come too if youâre worried about him.â
âHe doesnât give a shit about me,â Carter says.
âYou donât want to stay here,â I warn him. âThe kitchenâs still a mess.â
âIâll go stay with Bianca.â He gives me a hug. âCall me later.â
After he leaves, Z chuckles and glances at Teller. âNow I understand why you like him so much.â
âThanks for not shooting him,â I mumble.
Z seems offended. âHeâs just worried about his sister. Although I hope he has some skills to back up that mouth. Not everyone he runs into is gonna be as understanding.â
I shake my head. âNot so much.â
Teller lifts his chin. âGood call not mentioning the cameras.â
âIt wouldâve traumatized him to find out youâ¦â I say, nodding at Z ââ¦watched him sleep all night long.â
Z laughs. âI wasnât watching twenty-four-seven like a fuckinâ creeper.â
âThereâs more to it than what you told the cops, isnât there?â Teller asks. âNow that itâs just the three of us, what did you leave out?â
My gaze darts between Teller and Z. âPersonal, family things.â
Thankfully, Z takes that as a cue to leave. âIâm heading to the clubhouse. Iâll let Rock know what happened. Tell the guys youâll be up later so we can sit down at the table.â
I donât like the sound of that at all. Sit down at the table is obviously biker code for discuss how to kill Merlin. I hold my tongue until Z leaves.
âTalk to me, Charlotte,â Marcel says, running his hand over my hair. âIâm so sorry I wasnât here.â
âDonât, Marcel. Itâs not your fault.â
âYes, it is. Carterâs right.â He flicks his gaze across the room. âI almost fuckinâ lost it when I saw the cops in front of your building.â He holds me against him, and I soak up his comforting warmth for a few minutes before pulling away.
Where to begin?
âHe was pissed that I told you about what happened. Told me you wouldnât want me because of it.â
âFucking asshole.â He stares down at me. âYou know thatâs not true.â
I acknowledge that with a nod. âI pushed him. Hard. About the truth of that night. He had to know who it was or have some clue, but it only made him angrier.â Bits and pieces of what Chuck said click into place and my stomach lurches.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothing.â Composing myself, I begin again. âHe said I was pathetic for still thinking about it and I said thatâs why I told you, so youâd understand why I didnât respect him or have any loyalty to him when it came time to choose.â
âSunshine,â he croaks, holding me tighter.
âHe lost it. I thought he was going to hurt me again. You know the rest.â
Violence shimmers in his eyes. And I know exactly what it means.
Someone touched me. Hurt his woman. Marcelâs planning my uncleâs death as we sit here.
Gently, I touch his arm, pulling him out of his trance. âMarcel, donât. Please donât do anything. Iâm okay.â
He meets my eyes and gently rubs his thumb over my bruised cheek. âIn no way is this okay. He hit you. Hurt you.â
âWell, I did stab him. So, I think weâre even.â
He doesnât crack a smile. âHonestly, his club will probably punish him before I even get the chance.â
âWhat? No. Whisper wouldnâtââ
âSomething like this brings too much unwanted attention. Makes him seem unstable. They might view him as a liability.â
My uncleâs words come back to me.
âYou donât want to keep trying to unravel this.â
I hope thereâs time to pull the truth from my uncle before his club has him murdered.
When we arrive at the clubhouse, everyoneâs clear
ly heard about Charlotteâs attack. Hope and Trinity meet us in the living room.
âRockâs waiting for you,â Hope says. She leans in closer and in a lower voice adds, âIâll take her back to our house and keep an eye on her while youâre at the table.â
My throat tightens, and Hope wraps her arms around me for a quick hug.
âTeller! Letâs go!â Z barks from inside the war room.
I give Charlotte one last kiss before Hope and Trinity lead her out of the clubhouse.
Z smirks when I step in the room. âWaitinâ on you, brother. Bricks, Dex, and Birch are down at CB. Iâll fill them in later.â
âOne of you better fill me in now,â Rock growls.
I recount the story and when I get to the part about Charlotte plunging a knife in Merlin, Wrath lets out a low whistle.
âGo, Charlotte,â Murphy mutters.
âThis was all over what happened to her seven years ago? Why is it suddenly an issue for him?â Rock asks.
âCarter suggested it was grief from his momâs death, but I donât know.â
Rock taps the table in front of him. âWhat do you want to do?â
âHe hurt my girl.â My fists tighten. âI want to fucking rip him apart.â
âWolf Knights will get to him first,â Wrath says. âNo way Whisperâs gonna let that slide. Theyâre probably at the table voting in a new president right now.â
I turn to Rock. âIf he makes it out alive, I want a piece of him.â
âDone.â Rock glances around the table. âAnything else?â
Z raises his hand. âI think we should all take a second and acknowledge the fact that Charlotte barely blinked when she found out weâd set up cameras in her apartment.â
Rock snorts and then laughs. âPoor girl.â He turns to me. âYou explain it to her?â
âYeah. She was pissed, but she understood. It also probably kept her from spending the night in jail.â
Z shakes his head and laughs. âGirlâs brave. Merlin knocked her around pretty good and she still had enough spunk to give me lip about the cameras.â
âShe did? When?â
âWhen you were talking to your cop buddy.â
âHeâs not my buddy,â I grumble.
âI didnât take what she said as disrespect,â Z clarifies, glancing around the table. âSheâs opinionated and has a backbone. But sheâs also smart. She definitely understood the why of it.â
