; I sat down in a wood chair in front of her desk, my heart pounding with nervous anticipation. Wrenâs opinion of me mattered. I wanted to be just like her someday. She was polished, hardworking, and compassionate.
âIâm so pleased with your work on the Matthews case,â Wren said. âThat was some great negotiating on your part.â
âOh. Thank you.â I looked down at my hands in my lap.
âWhatâs up, Charlotte? You can tell me.â
I took a deep breath. âIâd like this to stay between us for now, but since youâre my boss, I feel like I need to tell you that . . . Iâm pregnant.â
Wren nodded slightly. âI figured.â
âYou what? How?â
âYou had some bad morning sickness.â
I laughed lightly. âYeah, whatâs up with that term, anyway? Itâs so not just in the morning.â
âHas it gotten better, then?â
âA little. And Iâve gotten more used to it. If I keep myself well-rested, that seems to help.â
âGood. I wanted to reach out to you several times and remind you that you have sick time and medical leave, but I didnât want to intrude.â
I studied the way her red suit coat looked against her cocoa skin, not wanting to think about her knowing this whole time. It mortified me.
âDoes Riley know?â she asked softly.
âNo.â
She nodded. âIâd never bring something like that up with him, but Iâve been hoping maybe the two of you would be able to work things out, in light of this . . . development.â
My lips parted and I forced them closed. âIn light of . . . ? Oh. Itâs not his baby.â
Wrenâs expression shifted then and I saw it. Judgment. Humiliation complete.
âOh. Iâm sorry for assuming, Charlotte. That was thoughtless of me.â
âNo, not at all.â My cheeks burned as I tried to think of what to say. âThis was . . . unplanned, obviously. Riley and I had broken up.â
About three hours before it happened, I thought but didnât say.
âAnd the father is . . . in your life? If you donât mind my asking?â
I nodded. âHe is. Heâs been very supportive.â
At least, heâd tried to be. I wasnât responding to Bennettâs texts and invitations to get together much because I was overwhelmed already with work, being sick, and trying to eat and get enough rest.
âWhatever you need, just let me know,â Wren said. âTime off, a lighter schedule . . .â
âNo. Iâm fine. I just wanted to let you know because Iâll need time off for doctorâs appointments and maternity leave when the time comes.â
âI hope youâll stay with me. Thatâs selfish, I know, because you could earn more in private practice.â
Why had she passed me over for the juvenile job if she thought so highly of my work? I was about to ask when she spoke instead.
âYouâve impressed me so far, Charlotte. I chose Riley for the juvenile job because heâs more experienced. It wasnât an easy decision.â
