âI donât want to mess this up,â he said. âI really donât. I canât remember the last time I liked someone this much.â
I triedânot very successfullyâto not roll my eyes. âIf thatâs the case, then do you think it was such a smart idea to get her a job at the same place you worked?â
âI thought it was a great idea. That way Iâd be able to see her a lot. Plus, Iâd be helping her out, because she really needed work.â
âYou mean Iâd be helping her out. Since Iâm the one signing the paychecks.â The paychecks were not actually signed, though they did have my stamped signature on them.
âShe needed a job, and we needed an admin. Iâd get to see her more. Five days a week. Maybe more than that if we kept up the same gym schedules. It all sounded pretty good to me. Except . . . itâs not going exactly how Iâd hoped.â
âShe seems fine. That whole thing with changing the water was pretty mint, if I do so say so myself.â
âYou should have offered to help her.â
âI did. And she turned me down. What did you want me to do? Force her to accept my assistance?â
; âNo, of course not. And she is doing great hereâI donât think it was a mistake to hire her. I just thought Iâd have an easier time talking to her.â
âYouâre such an amateur.â
âWhat is that supposed to mean?â
âExactly what I said.â
âYeah, well, I wouldnât say youâre an expert in the category, either. How well did things go with Annie?â
I waved my hand. âShe ended up being a little more unbalanced than I first thought. We all have a lapse in judgment from time to time. Listen, Jay, if you like her that much, just ask her out. What are you afraid of?â
âIâm afraid of making a fool of myself! Iâm afraid of her saying no. I donât want to overwhelm her.â
I thought of saying that there was no way Jonathan was going to be overwhelming anyone, but I kept my mouth shut.
âMaybe you could sort of . . . I donât know . . . get an idea from her whether or not sheâd be interested.â He wouldnât look at me as he said this.
âReally?â I said. âWhat is thisâmiddle school? Do you want me to write her a note and pass it to her across the aisle? Circle âyesâ if you like Jonathan. Circle ânoâ if you donât.â I laughed.
He looked at me in agony. âThis isnât funny! Itâs not a joke. And was I laughing at you when all that shit went down with Annie? When she tried to throw that stapler at you? I had your back.â
âYouâre right,â I said. âIâm not really laughing at you, though. Iâm laughing with you.â
âBut Iâm not laughing.â
âWell, if you were in my shoes, you might be. Sure, Iâll help you out, Jay. Iâll suss out the situation for ya, Iâll report back. Sound good?â
The look of relief on his face was clear as day. âYouâll do that for me?â
âSure. We can call it . . . Operation Daisy Dukes, how âbout that?â
âThatâs sounds totally sexist. How about we donât call it anything? Because then itâs making it sound like a much bigger deal than it actually is.â
âIf anyone is making this a big deal, itâs you.â
He took a deep breath. âI know, I know, youâre right. I donât want to turn this into something . . . something that itâs not.â
âRight,â I said. âWell, Iâll get right to it.â
âGetting right to itâ in this case meant leaving my office door open and going out into the main office to mingle far more than I would under other circumstances. With the door open, I could look out and see Daisyâs profile as she sat at her desk, and it seemed that every so often, Iâd catch her watching me, though sheâd always immediately look away when I looked up.
