âSo why? What was the wedding like? Awful?â
âNo, beautiful,â said Rose reflectively. âThe most beautiful wedding Iâve ever been to.â
âThen why the long face?â
Rose sat down at the kitchen table and put her wineglass down heavily. âItâs stupid, reallyââ She looked up into Laraâs frankly interested brown eyes. âDid I ever tell you that Sabrinaâs new husband is best friends with a prince?â
Laraâs eyes grew larger. âYouâre winding me up, right?â
Rose shook her head and bit back a half-smile. It did sound a bit far-fetched. âNo, Iâm not. Itâs the truth. Heâs prince of a countryâmore a principality, reallyâcalled Marabanâitâs in the Middle East.â
; âAnd next, I suppose youâll be telling me that heâs outrageously good-looking and rich, to boot!â
Rose sighed. âYes! Heâs exactly that. Just about the most perfect man youâve ever seen. Tall, and dark and handsomeââ
âOh, ha, ha, ha!â
âNo, he is! Honestly. Heâs divine. I danced with himâ¦â Her voice tailed off as she remembered how it felt to have his body so tantalisingly close to hers. âDanced with him, andââ
âAnd what?â
âAndââ No need to point out that she had got a little carried away on the dance-floor. She squirmed with remembered pleasure and glanced up to see Laraâs open-mouthed expression.
âOh, Rose, you didnât?â
Rose blinked as the implication behind Laraâs question squeaked its way home. âNo, of course I didnât! You surely donât imagine that Iâd meet a man at a wedding and hours later leap into bed with him, do you?â she questioned indignantly.
But you did it in thought if not in deed, didnât you? mocked the guilty voice of her conscience.
Lara was looking at her patiently. âSo what happened?â
âHe, well, he asked me to go for a drink with him once the bride and groom had left,â explained Rose.
âWhatâs the problem with that? You said yes, of course?â
âActually,â said Rose, in a high, forced voice, not quite believing that she had had the strength of will to go through with it, âI said no.â
Lara was blinking at her in bemusement. âYouâve lost me! Heâs gorgeous, heâs royal and you turned him down! Why, for heavenâs sake?â
âI donât know.â Rose sighed again. âWell, maybe thatâs not true, I suppose I do, really. Heâs so utterly irresistibleââ
âThatâs usually considered a plus where men are concerned, isnât it?â
âBut he would never commit, I know he wouldnâtâitâs written all over his face!â
Lara stared at her incredulously. âNever commit?â she echoed. âI canât believe Iâm hearing this! Rose, youâve danced with the guy once and already youâre talking commitment? And this from the woman who has always vowed never to get marriedââ
âUntil Iâm at least thirty-five,â said Rose with a look of fierce determination. âIâll have achieved something by then, so Iâll be ready! And people live longer these daysâit makes sense to put off getting married for as long as possible.â
âVery romantic,â said Lara.
âVery realistic,â commented Rose drily.
âSo why the talk of commitmentâor, rather, the lack of it?â
Rose took a thoughtful sip of wine. She wasnât really sure herself. Maybe because she didnât want to be just another woman in a long line of discarded women.
