âI know absolutely nothing about you. What stuff are you doing now?â I demanded.
Hero laughed. âSunshine, I donât think we have time for this with your parents standing in your kitchen.â
I waved a hand toward the kitchen. âMom is making breakfast, and Dad will turn on the TV. We have at least ten minutes before they come looking for us.â Maybe this was the pressure we needed for us to find out more about each other. âRigid is your dad,â I stated.
âUh, yup.â
âHe is a mechanic and all around car magician according to my dad.â
Hero laughed. âHeâs good at what he does.â
âWho is your mom?â I didnât need to walk out there and have my mom suddenly start talking about how she knew Heroâs mom.
âCyn.â
âSin? As in like sinning?â
Hero shook his head. âCyn as in Cynthia, Sunshine.â
; Okay. That made more sense than sin. âDo you have any siblings?â
âUh, not blood.â
âWhat does that mean?â I demanded. That should have been an easy answer. Instead, it was complicated.
âSunshine, I grew up around the club. The guys in the club are like my brothers, and Luna and Greta are like my sisters. Not blood, but they are family.â
âThatâs sweet, but you made that answer so much more complicated than it needed to be.â
Hero laughed.
I wagged my finger in his face. âStop laughing at me. These are serious questions I need to know so I donât look like an idiot.â
His face sobered.
âWhat are you in the club?â I hoped that question made sense.
âUh, well. Thatâs another complicated answer. Right now, Iâm just a member, but with King and the rest of the older members in Arizona, Iâm in charge.â
âYouâre the president?â Say what?
âYes and no. This is kind of like my tryout. Two waitresses ending up dead and Luna in jail isnât looking very good for me right now, though.â
âNone of that is your fault, though,â I argued.
âTake that up with King, Sunshine. Two days after he leaves, all hell breaks loose and Iâm the one holding the gavel.â
Not fair. âSo what happens now?â
âUh, King said heâs gonna get the RV to Arizona and then heâs flying back. Iâm assuming some, if not all, of the other guys are coming back, too.â
âSo your shot is over?â
He shrugged. âMaybe. I donât really know. I donât know what King is going to be able to do, but he thinks coming back will fix things.â He reached up and brushed my hair behind my ear. âInterrogation over?â
I didnât really have any other questions. At least that I could think of. âI suppose.â
